Drug Courts Assignment
For our assignment this week I have selected two drug courts from different states across the country. The first drug court that I have selected is located in Broward County, Florida. This drug court is the third oldest drug court in the nation and it serves around 1,000 clients everyday (“Broward Drug Court Treatment Program,” n.d, para. 1.) The drug treatment program in this county has two programs that allow for diversion from jail for individuals that have committed drug related offenses. The first program that they offer is the Pre-Trial Intervention Program. This program was designed as an alternative to traditional incarceration for first time, non-violent criminal offenders that are charged with the purchase or possession of a controlled substance or any other substance abuse related offense. (“Broward Drug Court Treatment Program.” n.d, para. 1.) The other treatment program that the county offers is the Diversionary Treatment Program. This program was designed to divert adjudicated felons with substance related issues from returning to prison. (“Broward Drug Court Treatment Program,” n.d, para. 1) Both of these programs require a minimum of one year of treatment with the goal being to break the cycle of addiction and criminal justice involvement by using a variety treatment options to help the individual become a productive member of society. (“Broward Drug Court Treatment Program,” n.d, para. 1.)
There are a variety of rules and guidelines to follow if an individual wishes to enter and remain in either of the programs. In the Pre-Trial Intervention Program offenders may be able to have their felony charges dismissed if they are 18 years of age or older, have no prior conviction or offense, and have been charged with substance abuse related charges. (“Broward Drug Court Treatment Program,” n.d, para. 4)
Throughout the course of the program judges continue to schedule...
