With the 2014 Olympics currently taking pace, there is an increase in the need to “win”. Some athletes may decide that nothing else matters but to win at all costs. Athletes use various methods to enhance their performances in their sport. Some of these methods of enhancement include special diets and non-stop training. But aside from diets and hard work, success can be obtained through physiological, mechanical and pharmacological doping techniques.
When reputations, rewards, and lives are on the line, pharmacists, medical professionals, trainers and sports organizations may choose to bend the rules, or take advantages of hazardous enhancing techniques. Sometimes trainers will even develop doping methods for a better performance, harmful to the athlete or not, without the athlete’s knowledge. Now, doping is beginning to branch out, and is not only being used for better sports performances.
There are hundreds of unknown doping substances and techniques abused by professional athletes around the world. The most commonly abused substances are: anabolic androgenic steroids, human growth hormone (hGH) and erythropoietin (EPO).
Drugs that enhance athletic performance are not new to today’s athletic competitions. In ancient Greece, mushrooms, plants and mixtures of wine and herbs were used by Olympians and Roman gladiators. There were various plants that had stimulated speed and endurance, as well as relieved pain so athletes could keep performing. In the 1904 Olympics, Thomas Hicks, a marathon runner, used a mixture of brandy and strychnine causing him to almost die.
