Hurting and suffering. Waiting and wondering.   These words describe the lives of patients, like Jessica Bondar, waiting for a life changing organ transplant. After suffering from life-threatening complications from the flu, Jessica Bondar had been waiting for a heart transplant for almost 3 years. After years of suffering as she awaited an available organ donor, Jessica Bondar passed away at the young age of 19 last April. Organ donation is the harvesting of healthy organs and tissues from an individual after he or she has died for the purpose of transplanting them into a living recipient. Many people believe organ donation goes against the laws of their religion. However, organ donation is in fact consistent with the beliefs of most religions and is even considered an honorable act of kindness. In addition, many individuals also believe those who have donated organs cannot have open-casket funerals. Since the donor’s body is clothed for burial, organ donation doesn’t interfere with having an open-casket funeral. Although many doubt giving up their organs after death, being an organ donor is a charitable and valuable act that can ensure a better future for thousands of people. Every individual should make the decision to donate his or her organs after death because this act will save and improve the lives of others, assist medical researchers develop new treatments for illnesses, and help families cope with the loss of their loved one.
Registering as an organ donor provides hope the thousands of individuals waiting for a life-enhancing or potentially life-saving transplant. There is a continual shortage of organs and tissues required for transplants and the demand for organs continues to outweigh their availability. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve the quality of lives up to seventy-five others through tissue donation.
