Power. Significance. Meaning. This is what defines a distinctive voice. They’re inspirational, motivating and sometime shocking but all distinctive voices have the purpose of bringing across a message to an audience. The following texts portray these aspects and would therefore be suitable for the 2014 HSC. This is evident when looking at Martin Luther King’s I have a Dream, Severn Cullis-Suzuki’s Address to the Plenary Session, Earth Summit and the film Remember the Titans directed by Boaz Yakin. King’s speech was elevating for African-Americans, providing hope for a better future. This is amplified through techniques like historic and biblical allusions and imagery. Suzuki’s speech is much more eye-opening because of her youth, and therefore uses simpler, but still effective techniques like emotive language and contrasts. Remember the Titans evokes an emotional response from its audience by using techniques like camera angles, dialogue and music.
King creates a distinctive voice via the use of allusions, and by executing them implicitly, helps give reference to both history and the bible. His opening line is “five score years ago,” which is very similar to that of Abraham Lincoln’s “four score and seven years ago” in his speech The Gettysburg Address. This is significant as Lincoln was the one to sign the Emancipation Proclamation Act that declared freedom to all those in slavery. This defines for the audience the fact that one hundred years later, African-Americans were still not free. King also uses biblical references, for example, “It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity,” is similar to that of Psalm’s “…weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” These allusions are important to King, as he himself is a preacher, and are important to the audience in identifying the moral basis for King’s arguments.
