Academic Essay Rough Draft

Adolf Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt never met; however their lives seemed destined to intertwine. Franklin D.Roosevelt was born in 1882 and, Adolf Hitler in 1889; both men born of the same generation. Both became leaders of their respective countries within days of each other, Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933, and FDR was inaugurated President of The United States on March 4, 1933. Both men were democratically elected, and both tried to lead their countries out of the Depression. As if predetermined by fate, both would die within days of each other. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, and Adolf Hitler died eighteen days later on April 30, 1945.
FDR   had a dream that The United States should be a world power, especially after World War 1, and Hitler wanted to bring Germany back to the powerful nation it was before the end of World War 1. FDR was leading the United States by social and economic reforms of The New Deal, as he struggled with America’s isolationism due to the growing conflict in Europe. Hitler was leading Germany by building its industry and military back to the powerful state it was before the end of World War 1 and the Treaty of Versailles. This is where the comparisons end.
In the spring of 1933, FDR was wooing labor unions,ethnic, and racial minorities with which he would build a long-lasting Democratic Party electoral majority, and making highly innovative use of the radio, called the “Fireside Chats”, to reach beyond the hostile media magnates who controlled the nation’s newspapers. Hitler, however was using the Reichstag ,the German legislature, to dissolve the German labor unions and purge all critical speech of his policies by the German press. Hitler soon declared that the Nazi party was the only legal party in Germany. He did this by imposing the “Gestapo”, or secret police, to impose its reign of terror on...
