As I took my seat in my ninth grade English class, the first words my teacher spoke were those of Mark Twain. “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails.   Explore, Dream, Discover.”   These words instilled very powerful and influential meaning to me. This was ultimately the driving force of the development for the person I am today.  

In my sophomore year of high school, my anxiety was higher than I could ever recall.   The sound of an alarm clock immediately sparked anticipation and apprehension of the anxiety provoking challenges of the day ahead of me.   At times, I felt very different than my peers and wondered if they ever felt as anxious as I did.   Did they ever feel like all eyes were on them and that everyone was laughing?   No matter where I was, I could not escape those type of feelings. I felt as if the entire world could see right through me, but did not understand what I was feeling. Unfortunately, as a result of experiencing those feelings that consumed me at the time, I missed out on many opportunities for academic, social and emotional growth.   I lost friends and even withdrew somewhat from my own family.   When it came to class presentations, I would have rather taken the zero than stand in front of a crowd of people. For the longest time, I would not leave my comfort zone because I lacked confidence and I was continuously flooded with fear and anxiety. Although, it felt impossible to overcome, I knew that i could no longer live my life the way that i was. Little did i know then, my life was going to change completely.

Then, something occurred during my junior year of high school. As I passed by my former ninth grade English teacher’s classroom, I heard him reciting the very quote that he had on my first day of high school. Throughout the day, I pondered the words he had spoken, “Twenty...
