INTRODUCTION
Brief Origin and basic beliefs of Buddhism.
Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama , who was an Indian prince. The philosophy and faith encourages the pursuit of the principles through as many lifetimes as it takes to finally achieve perfect bliss and knowledge in Nirvana. The word comes from 'budhi', 'to awaken'. It has its origins about 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was himself awakened (enlightened) at the age of 35.
Buddhism explains a purpose to life, it explains apparent injustice and inequality around the world, and it provides a code of practice or way of life that leads to true happiness. In other words the path in life should be moral, and through what we say, what we do and our livelihood, focusing the mind on being fully aware of our thoughts and actions, and developing wisdom by understanding the Four Noble Truths, and by developing compassion for others.

In a literal sense- it is the love of wisdom
In a broad sense (As a worldview) - It is an activity undertaken by people when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves and the world around them.

Characteristics of Philosophy
  1. Rational- Philosophy as a discipline relies on critical thinking skills and the use of logic as a way to understand ourselves, and the world around us.
  2. Argumentative- it is dialectic in nature whereby content is arguable. Thus, philosophy rejects any dogma.
  3. Open – Any claims made by philosophers or scholars can be questioned and challenged. If there is no evidence to back up a claim, then the claim can be challenged by anybody.
