The purpose this paper is to compare and contrast the differences and similarities between my family, and the families of Tre Styles and Ricky Baker of Boys in the Hood. Various concepts will be looked at and taken into consideration to examine factors that lead to these three families structure, social location and circumstances as well as functioning on the continuum of family health. Consideration will also be given to the different socio-cultural and psychodynamic factors that may have contributed to the functioning of these three families.
​First we will examine Tre Styles and his family. By viewing the film, we learn that the family structure in Tre’s family is the parents are separated, and they have one son. At the beginning of the film, Tre is living with his mother, Reva. After getting into an incident at school, Tre is sent to live with his father, Furious Styles.   Throughout the film we see that although separated, Tre’s parents are still civil with one another and still keep in contact and make decisions together regarding Tre. Furious believes that Tre needs to learn “how to be a man”, and needs a strong father figure in his life in order to teach him responsibility, he tells Tre that he wants him to have a good life so he does not end up like the others. Reva agrees to this, and allows Furious to take Tre on the weekdays, “I can’t teach him how to be a man, that’s your job” (Singleton, 1991).
​Utilizing the Family Life Cycle Theory, “The emotional and intellectual stages you pass through from childhood to your retirement years as a member of a family are called the family life cycle” (Family Life Cycle, par. 1), we see that Tre’s family is spent mostly in the Parenting Stage, with both of his parents raising him. Moving through the stages of the Family Life Cycle, Tre eventually leaves to college with his girlfriend, Brandi. Tre was never really given any assigned roles by either of his parents.
