When Thomas and his family move to a new home and starts at a new school, all he wants is to fit in. The opening credits sequence starts and is used a lot in Elissa Down's movie "The Black Balloon", 15-year-old Thomas, has to adjust to the rules of a new school as well as a family move. The film is based on a family by the name of “Mollison” and it is not your ordinary family, the father, Simon (Erik Thomson), who talks to his teddy bear Rex and then seeks advice from him which is very unusual. Their mentally challenged son Charlie is what really makes the movie spark. Always teased as a "spastic", he has numerous ways of getting his family's attention like defecating on the floor . Throughout the movie it shows he will never have a chance to fit into the world, but the movie doesn't focus on this instead it focuses on his brother Thomas which main struggle is to fit in with Charlie. Its not easy but he eventually is able to finally make means with his brother. During this process Thomas falls in love with a girl which surprisingly helps him to reunite with his brother despite the things Charlie has done to her.

This film definitely has superior cinematography, from the warm yellow light to the beautiful wide angle shots with nice warm colors and the sound design very neutral. All these aspects really create an enjoyable viewing experience and reminds me of "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006), in which Toni Collette stars. Toni Collette plays Maggie Mollison in the Black Balloon by the way. The sound design in the Black Balloon really makes it feel like that classic Aussie family that we all know, this movie really demonstrates Elisa Downs talent to create a really nice movie that is both Dramatic and Comedy.

Rhys Wakefield's performance is outstanding as Thomas, he has to balance his character's own problems of a new school and a love interest with his worries about other teens and trying to fit in with his autistic brother. This film seems to depict adolescents...
