Pool, Larry: Biography
Born Febuary 1, 1950 in Texarkana,Arkansas Pool Larry decided to join the Army when he was 19. Larry was a tall handsome caucasian teenager who often dreamed about flying the skies. He had a wonderful brother and a gorgeous sister who both loved him very much. Pool served in the military from 1 to 2 years stationed in Vihn Long,South Vietnam. With his passion and talent he recieved 4 metals and became an E-4 (specialist Four). These specialist ranks were created to reward personnel with higher degrees of experience and technical knowledge. As intelligent and outstanding as he was, Pool Larry earned everything he got and sure did diserve it.
When Pool was young, airplanes were one thing that really fascinated him, "He always liked airplanes, collected a lot of plastic models and displayed them from the ceiling of his room."("Delpha Pool".). When he voluntarily joined the army, in his words he said “At least if I join, I might get to do what I want, and that is to be an aircraft.” During Vietnam, many young men where fighting for different reasons; some to escape the rough life at home particularly because of problems or money issues and other who had nothing better to do. On the other hand, Larry had a lot of motivation, he wanted to make his dream come true, and so he did. Eventually, he became a crew chief, the head person on a race team who directs both the driver and pit crew. His last year a crew cheif was 1969, when he passed away.
During 1969 when Pool was taking his last steps, the United States was going through some interesting changes. Richard Nixon had been elected for president; 250,000 people march on Washington in protest at the Vietnam War, and the very first U.S. troop withdrawals are made from Vietnam.
