Case Study: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
While Bill and Melinda Gates are married and together head up The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that helps people worldwide, they definitely have varying characteristics and traits that are used to run the organization. This study will break down the differences in the two and shed light on how they manage differently, all for the benefit of the whole.
Personality Traits
Out of the “Big Five” personality traits given to us by Lussier and Achua in Leadership: Theory Application and Skill Development, Bill Gates would rank high in surgency, as he is dominant in his business. He has “Bill” meetings (Lussier & Achua, 2012, p.64) where employees must bring their ideas to him and hear his criticisms.
Melinda Gates, on the other hand, has the ability to win people over by her persuasiveness (Lussier & Achua, 2012, p. 64) and creates relationships with her employees on a more personal level. She shows a high level of agreeableness and emotional intelligence, and an ability to understand where others are coming from in their ideas; a sign of social awareness (Lussier & Achua, 2012, p. 39).
Together, Bill and Melinda make a great team. He is the head honcho that is known to oversee the “overall direction” of the organization (‘Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’, n.d.), while Melinda helps “shapes and approves strategies” (‘Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’, n.d.), but spends a lot of time making relationships and coordinating with others around the globe to better other peoples’ ways of life. They both make public appearances, for the face of the organization, but she is the softer more “social” one of the two.
