Battling Cancer
What is Cancer?
“Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. Most types of cancer cells form a lump or mass called a tumor, and are named after the part of the body where the tumor first starts.   A tumor is the name for a swelling or lesion formed by an abnormal growth of cells (termed neoplastic).Tumor is not synonymous with cancer. A tumor can be benign (nonthreatening), pre-malignant or malignant, whereas cancer is by definition malignant”.

Many persons in Jamaica are fearful of this dreaded disease and whenever it is found to be in their families, it immediately put a strain on the relatives.   While some persons are strong and willing to fight this disease, others are worrisome and give up easily, just by the mention of this disease by their doctor.

The growth of cancer is evident in four stages, which means if it is identified at stage 1, it is in a localized area and has not yet started to spread, however if the patient is not quickly attended to, then it will spread to the lymph nodes and become a stage 2 cancer which is now more dangerous.   Therefore, the longer it stays within you, the more it is likely to spread from organ to organ until it destroys the whole system.

Causes of Cancer
Studies have shown that cancer is caused by many and varying factors. The factors may be constitutional or environmental – the area wherein the person works and/or lives may have chemicals or other materials that are hazardous, such as asbestos, which is used as roofing on some buildings, but is a health hazard and contains a cancer-causing component, that is to be avoided at all cost; of such an individual may not even be aware. Cancer may be caused by hereditary or lifestyle practices such as smoking, use of toxic substances and the practice of eating food that are high in fat.
