Alvin Ailey Revelations- Evaluate the effectiveness of the choreographer’s choice of components in relation to subject matter
Alvin Ailey’s Revelations and Still life at the penguin cafe are two different styles of dance from very different points in history. Revelations is a contemporary dance and Still life is a classical dance. Each dance has certain points that have made it well known and highly praised. They both incorporate different styles of dance but they do share a few characteristics. The two dances both have very different subject matters although they both hold the same importance and the aim to get the message across.
The stage props and the lighting seemed to be different in each performance of still life. The backdrop is suited to fit the animal. This was very important for the audience to understand this important transformation from one animal to another. It also shows the importance of each animal and the individuality of each of them. Revelations had a very plain set. This seemed to put more of a focus on the dancers instead of the atmosphere on stage. The backdrop was just a dark cloth with no pattern or picture throughout most of the performance. The lighting covered the entire stage when many dancers were performing at the same time. When soloists performed, a spotlight was focused on them to draw all the attention to the dance and not focused on the backdrop. Both the dances use props like in the penguin section of still life they use tables and serving trays to show they are serving the humans although in Revelations the use of umbrellas and sheets of material highlight the story of the dance however it does not take the spotlight off the dance. The music used in revelations is mostly classic choir based music which is different compared to still life which is just instrumental. The music in still life was however produced before the choreography where as in revelations the music was produced after the choreography.
