Importance of Academic Writing
Many first-year students are afraid of their first report, assignment or other writing paper. Writing sometimes is just the one way to show the skills, which were improved or learned during studding process. Good writing skills is very important for one’s future career and successful studying. This essay is focused on four main topics: plagiarism, topic sentences, introductions and conclusions and proofreading.
First problem that new-entry students may face is plagiarism. Plagiarism is using of someone’s words or ideas and presenting them as one’s own. Nowadays, plagiarism is a very serious problem in the academic world and it is considered as a form of academic theft. Furthermore, student who cheated would not get knowledge about the subject, he or she would be scary to get caught and the good result or grade is never guaranteed. Moreover, there are some punitive measures for both sides of cheating case. One of the most useful ways to deal with plagiarism is referencing. Referencing is used to tell the reader where ideas from other sources have been used. Referencing is a formal system as there are rules and standards to follow. Many students find making references quite difficult at first, but like any skill, it takes time and patience to learn.
The second thing to be discussed is the importance of topic sentences. Generally, each paragraph should contain a topic sentence, which states the main idea of the paragraph. The topic sentence is so important in academic writing because it gives the reader clarity. Mainly, topic sentences will help the reader to understand what a specific paragraph will discuss and to help to stay on course with understanding the whole text. Thus, have a strong topic sentence in each paragraph will benefit the writers to successfully share their ideas and position about the topic, hence creating a great persuasive approach to influence the readers.
