Abnormal psychology is the branch of psychology that studies unusual patterns of behavior, emotion and thought, which may or may not be understood as precipitating a mental disorder. This branch of psychology deals mostly with “abnormal” behavior which is addressed in a clinical context. For example: anxiety disorders, affective disorders and eating disorders. In one the branch of abnormal psychology is normality and abnormality, there are four concepts which are Statistical infrequency, Deviation from social norms, maladaptiveness and adequate functioning and suffering and distress.
Statistical abnormality is an interpretation of normality that depends on literal meaning assumes there is average behavior, or the behavior that frequently occur. The behavior that does not occur often is treated as ‘abnormal’. This is particularly useful for dealing with numbers, such as IQ score. When using numbers we can obtain the mean and easily measure the majority of people scores to evaluate if they are abnormal or not. Through this concept it’s easier to claim that if a person’s behavior is normal or abnormal based on the comparison with the behavior of the ‘average’ person.
However, this definition fails to distinguish between desirable and undesirable behavior. There are many very gifted individuals which could be classified as ‘abnormal’ using this definition. The use of the term ‘abnormal’ in this context would not be appropriate. Everyone is different and each person have different personalities, someone people are better in others in different ways, so it’s not really that reliable to say what is normal and what is abnormal since each person have different memories and had to overcome different hardships, which affects their behavior. Many rare behaviors or characteristics have no bearing on normality or abnormality for example someone may use their left hand to write while others mostly use their left hand.
