Rollo May made a good point about depression in the quote above. If depression goes undiagnosed and untreated it could consume a person and make him or her believe there is no hope. There are many options to helping depression.
Webmd defines depression as; “Depression is an illness that causes a person to feel sad and hopeless for much of the time. It is different from normal feelings of sadness, grief, or low energy.” (Webmd homepage on depression) Depression can make a person have many different feelings as well as act in many different ways.
“Depression may begin with symptoms of anxiety (such as excessive worrying) or symptoms such as sadness or lack of energy that last for days or months before the onset of full-blown depression. You may have trouble concentrating or remembering, experience a loss of pleasure in things you used to enjoy, feel hopeless, and have low energy and changes in sleeping and eating patterns. You may withdraw socially from others and lose interest in sexual activity.”1
Depression can effect they way a person lives his or her life. Not only does depression affect the person with the mood disorder but it also affects the people around the person with the disorder. “Watching someone you love fight depression can be frustrating and frightening. Remember, you can't take responsibility for someone else, and the decision to get help is up to the person with depression.” (Depression. COM, help someone you love) There are several websites such a depression.com to help people cope with loved ones who are struggling with depression.
